The poem
Original: 旱时田里皆枯藁 / 谢天甘雨落淋淋 / 花果草木皆润泽 / 始知一雨值千金
The story
Yang Ye, surrounded and out of hope, killed himself against a stone monument, and his seventh son died carrying a plea for reinforcements. Yang the Sixth, Yang Yanzhao, fell back to Calabash Valley, and in the last extremity his brother, who had become a monk on Mount Wutai, arrived with fighting monks and cut him out. That relief force was the rain after the drought.
What it means
The image is drought meeting sweet rain: rescue inside difficulty. The fields are already scorched, the rain falls, and everything green is restored, which is when you learn that one rainfall is worth a fortune. The lot has two faces. The glad one is that a long-blocked matter suddenly opens and help does arrive. The warning one is that this is timely rain, and if you miss it a comparable chance will not come again soon. So take what comes without picking it over and without treating it lightly.
