The story
Shang Lu of Zhejiang lost his father young and grew up poor, but studied without ceasing. He took first place in the provincial examination, first place in the metropolitan, and first place in the palace examination, the three firsts, achieved by no one else in the Ming. He rose to be chief grand secretary, climbing steadily, step by step.
What it means
The image is an audience before the emperor, and the sign is as good as this oracle gets. Spring flowers, treasure arriving from a great distance, and the leap at the Dragon Gate that lands like thunder on level ground. Office received, poverty finding treasure, wishes going as you want them, and the sign calls itself first among the hundred. Years of quiet preparation are ripening exactly as the opportunity arrives. Step forward boldly and put everything you have ready on the table.
