否 · Pǐ
The Judgment
Standstill. Evil people do not further the perseverance of the superior person. The great departs, the small approaches. Heaven rises away and earth sinks down, so the two no longer meet. Communication fails, cooperation dries up, and the petty rise while the worthy withdraw. This is a season to endure rather than to conquer.
The Image
Heaven and earth do not unite: the image of standstill. Thus the superior person falls back upon his inner worth in order to escape the difficulties, and does not permit himself to be honoured with revenue.
Interpretation
Everything feels blocked, and it is not your imagination. Communication is failing, the wrong people are being rewarded, and effort that would normally produce results simply disappears. The oracle is clear that you cannot fix this by force or cleverness, because the obstruction is systemic rather than personal. What you can do is withdraw gracefully, reduce your exposure, and protect your integrity. Do not sell yourself into a compromised position for the sake of income or status; that is the specific trap of this hexagram. Live simply, keep your commitments small, stay close to people you trust, and quietly maintain your skills. Stagnation is a phase in a cycle, not a permanent state, and the situation is already carrying the seed of its reversal. Your job is to still be standing, uncorrupted and capable, when the way reopens. That is a real victory in this season.
Love
Distance, silence, and misunderstanding that talking does not seem to fix. Do not force intimacy through the wall. Give it space, stay decent, and use the time to be clear with yourself about what you actually want. Silence now is not the end of the story, only a cold stretch of it.
Career
A blocked, political, or declining environment where merit is not rewarded. Do not make a dramatic stand or accept a compromising promotion. Reduce commitments, keep your skills sharp, build outside options, and wait for movement. Reduce exposure, keep skills sharp, and quietly build the options you will need later.
Advice
Withdraw, simplify, and keep your integrity intact until the blockage breaks.
Line by line
When ribgrass is pulled up, the sod comes with it. Each according to his kind. Perseverance brings good fortune and success. Withdraw together with people of like mind, early and without drama.
They bear and endure; this means good fortune for inferior people. The standstill serves to help the great man to attain success. Endure quietly. What flatters others need not corrupt you.
They bear shame. Those who took advantage of the situation begin to feel the weight of what they have done. Do not gloat and do not join them. The turning has already started inwardly.
He who acts at the command of the highest remains without blame. Those of like mind partake of the blessing. Movement becomes possible again, but only for one acting under legitimate authority and shared purpose.
Standstill is giving way. Good fortune for the great man. What if it should fail, what if it should fail? In this way he ties it to a cluster of mulberry shoots. Relief comes; stay vigilant.
The standstill comes to an end. First standstill, then good fortune. Obstruction does not end by itself; someone actively overturns it. The bad season closes and the reward follows immediately.
