Hexagram 2 · The Receptive
坤 · Kūn
The Judgment
The Receptive brings sublime success, furthering through the perseverance of a mare. If the superior person undertakes something and tries to lead, he goes astray; but if he follows, he finds guidance. It is favourable to find friends in the west and south, and to forgo friends in the east and north. Quiet perseverance brings good fortune.
The Image
The earth's condition is receptive devotion. Thus the superior person who has breadth of character carries the outer world, supporting what is placed upon him without complaint and without needing to be seen doing it.
Interpretation
Kun is the answering half of creation, and it teaches a kind of strength that looks nothing like force. Right now your power lies in responding well rather than initiating: in supporting, absorbing, hosting, completing what someone else began. This is not passivity. The earth carries enormous weight and never boasts about it. Practically, that means following a good lead rather than competing with it, doing the unglamorous work thoroughly, and giving situations time to develop instead of hurrying them to a decision. If you push to the front now you will lose your way; if you let events show you their shape, guidance appears. Seek companionship and cooperation over rivalry. The reward of this hexagram is not a dramatic win but a deep, durable stability that others come to rely on, and that eventually gives you far more influence than seizing control ever would.
Love
Warm, patient, deeply nourishing love. Your gift is making the other person feel safe and accepted rather than pursued. Receive as well as give, and say what you need out loud, or devotion quietly curdles into self-erasure and unspoken resentment.
Career
Serve, support, and execute rather than compete for the spotlight. Reliability, teamwork, and thorough follow-through are what will be valued and remembered now. Avoid power struggles you did not start. Choose the good leader worth following, then make that person's work possible.
Advice
Yield, support, and endure with a steady heart, and the ground you hold will hold you.
Line by line
When there is hoarfrost underfoot, solid ice is not far off. Small early signs point to a large slow development. Notice the cooling tone, the missed message, the drifting habit, and address it now while it is still only frost.
Straight, square, great. Without purpose, yet nothing remains unfurthered. Act from natural uprightness rather than calculation. When your conduct is simply honest and your reactions unforced, the right results arrive without your having to engineer them.
Hidden lines. One is able to remain persevering. If by chance you are in the service of a king, seek not works but bring to completion. Do your excellent work without claiming credit, and let the achievement belong to the shared effort.
A tied-up sack. No blame, no praise. A time to close your mouth and hold your position. Discretion protects you in an environment where speaking would be misread. Expect neither recognition nor criticism, and be content with that.
A yellow lower garment brings supreme good fortune. Yellow is the colour of the centre and the garment is worn beneath. Quiet, modest reliability in a position of real responsibility earns the deepest trust available to you.
Dragons fight in the meadow. Their blood is black and yellow. Yielding pushed past its limit has turned into open struggle for supremacy. Nobody wins this. Step back from the contest before both sides are damaged beyond repair.
