The Judgment

The Abysmal repeated. If you are sincere, you have success in your heart, and whatever you do succeeds. Water flows on without interruption and reaches its goal by filling every hollow in its path. Danger doubled cannot be avoided, only passed through. Constancy of heart is the one thing that carries you across it.

The Image

Water flows on uninterruptedly and reaches its goal: the image of the abysmal repeated. Thus the superior person walks in lasting virtue and carries on the business of teaching, keeping his conduct steady in every condition.

Interpretation

This is the hexagram of real difficulty: danger above and danger below, one problem arriving on top of another. Its counsel is neither escape nor heroics. Water does not fight the ravine; it keeps moving, fills what is in front of it, and continues. Do the same. Keep your routines, keep your integrity, keep your word, and take the next necessary step without pretending things are fine and without dramatising them. Sincerity is repeatedly named as the saving quality, because in danger, honesty with yourself and others is what stops small trouble compounding into disaster. Accept that this period will be uncomfortable and that you cannot shortcut it. Do not take on new risk, do not grasp at a rescue that requires you to compromise yourself, and do not lose heart at the halfway point. Passage through deep water is genuinely formative; what you learn here you will use for years.

Love

A difficult, testing period. Do not make major decisions from fear or exhaustion. Steady honesty, consistent presence, and small acts of care are what get you both through this to firmer ground. Get through this stretch together and judge the relationship again from calmer ground.

Career

Real professional danger: instability, pressure, or a project in trouble. Keep your standards and your commitments precisely. Avoid new risk and desperate moves. Reliability during a bad season is remembered for a long time. Reliability during a bad season is what people remember about you for years afterwards.

Advice

Keep moving with a sincere heart, and let steady conduct carry you through the danger.

Line by line

Line 1

Repetition of the abysmal. In the abyss one falls into a pit. Misfortune. Growing used to danger and losing your alarm at it. Familiarity has made you careless and you sink deeper without noticing.

Line 2

The abyss is dangerous. One should strive to attain small things only. Surrounded, with no way out yet. Do not attempt escape in one leap; secure a small advantage, then another.

Line 3

Forward and backward, abyss on abyss. In danger like this, pause at first and wait, otherwise you will fall into a pit in the abyss. Do not act. Every direction is worse.

Line 4

A jug of wine, a bowl of rice with it; earthen vessels simply handed in through the window. There is certainly no blame in this. In hard times, plain sincerity replaces ceremony.

Line 5

The abyss is not filled to overflowing, it is filled only to the rim. No blame. The danger is levelling off. Do not attempt more than restoring balance; ambition here would reopen everything.

Line 6

Bound with cords and ropes, shut in between thorn-hedged prison walls. For three years one does not find the way. Misfortune. Losing the way in danger leads to a long confinement.
