Hexagram 36 · Darkening of the Light
夷 · Míng Yí
The Judgment
Darkening of the Light. It furthers one to be persevering in adversity. The sun has sunk beneath the earth and been wounded; a dark power holds the high places while the clear-sighted are pushed down. In such a time do not display your brightness. Keep your inner light burning, veil it outwardly, and hold to what is right until the dawn.
The Image
The light has sunk into the earth: the image of the Darkening of the Light. Thus the superior man governs the crowd by veiling his brilliance, appearing simple and unassuming while remaining perfectly clear within.
Interpretation
You are in a situation where honesty and ability are not being rewarded, and may even be punished. Perhaps a workplace where the wrong person holds power, a family where truth is unwelcome, or a period when everything you try is met with obstruction. The counsel is precise: do not fight the darkness head-on, and do not let it change who you are. Protect your inner clarity by keeping it private. Say less than you know. Do the necessary work without flourish, appear ordinary, and avoid becoming the target that principled people so easily become. This is endurance, not surrender; the hexagram assumes the darkness passes and you are still standing. Meanwhile guard your health, your finances, and one or two trustworthy friendships, because these are the supports that get you through. Wounded light still gives light, and what you preserve now you will be able to use fully later.
Love
A cold or misunderstood season in which explaining yourself repeatedly only hurts more. Keep your affection genuine and your expectations modest, protect your own heart from cynicism, and wait. Do not force an intimate truth into a climate that cannot yet receive it kindly.
Career
Recognition is being withheld, perhaps unfairly, and open protest would cost you more than it gains. Do competent work, document quietly, keep allies close and opinions private. Prepare an exit or a change without announcing it, and let time expose what argument cannot.
Advice
Keep your light burning inwardly and unseen, and outlast the dark rather than challenging it.
Line by line
Darkening of the light in flight: he lowers his wings. The traveller goes three days without eating, yet he has somewhere to go. Others gossip about his choice. Accept early hardship and misunderstanding as the price of leaving a bad situation.
Darkening of the light wounds him in the left thigh. He is hurt but not disabled, and he rescues himself with the strength of a horse. Injury that is met with prompt, vigorous help brings good fortune; do not let the wound become permanent.
Darkening of the light during the hunt in the south: their great leader is captured. A chance arises to remove the source of the trouble at its root. Take it, but do not expect the damage of years to be corrected all at once.
He penetrates into the left side of the belly and reaches the very heart of the darkening, then leaves by gate and courtyard. Having seen the situation clearly from inside, he withdraws in time, before the corruption can implicate him.
Darkening of the light as with Prince Chi, who feigned madness at a tyrant's court and survived. Perseverance furthers. When escape is impossible, conceal your intelligence, keep your convictions unspoken, and hold to inner truth until circumstances change.
Not light but darkness. First he climbed to heaven, then he plunged into the depths of the earth. The one who darkened the light for everyone else is finally consumed by it. Every tyranny ends by destroying itself; wait it out.
