Hexagram 47 · Oppression
困 · Kùn
The Judgment
Oppression. Success; perseverance. The great man brings about good fortune, and there is no blame. When one has something to say, it is not believed. The lake has drained away and the water is gone; strength is exhausted and words carry no weight. In such a time, prove yourself by conduct rather than argument, and hold to your purpose.
The Image
There is no water in the lake: the image of Exhaustion. Thus the superior man stakes his life on following his will. Stripped of everything external, he holds to what he most deeply means.
Interpretation
This is the hexagram of being worn down: money short, energy gone, support withdrawn, and, most painfully, no one willing to listen when you explain. The classical text says plainly that your words will not be believed now, which is why every impulse to defend yourself should be redirected into simply carrying on well. Oppression tests what your commitments are made of. If you can keep your integrity and good humour while the props are removed, you come out of this with something that cannot be taken from you again. Practically, cut your obligations to the essential, accept help from the few who genuinely offer it, and protect your health and sleep, since exhaustion is the real enemy here. Avoid drink, drift and self-pity, the classic escapes the lines warn against. And remember that the hexagram begins by promising success: this is a passage, not a permanent condition, and it ends when you stop fighting it and start enduring it.
Love
A depleted stretch where neither of you feels understood and talking makes it worse. Stop trying to win the explanation. Be reliably present, undemanding and kind, look after your own reserves, and let the difficult season pass without doing lasting damage.
Career
Resources, recognition and morale are all low, and complaints will not land. Keep doing solid work, reduce commitments to what you can actually sustain, and quietly prepare better options. Your reputation is being formed now by how you behave under strain.
Advice
Stop explaining yourself and simply endure well; conduct is the only argument that works now.
Line by line
He sits oppressed under a bare tree and strays into a gloomy valley; for three years he sees nothing. Despondency has become a habit and is making the situation worse. The darkness is partly self-made, so stop retreating further into it.
Oppressed while at meat and drink. The man with the scarlet knee bands is coming. It furthers one to offer sacrifice; setting forth brings misfortune. Comfort has become its own trap. Wait, serve something higher, and help will arrive.
He lets himself be oppressed by stone and leans on thorns; he enters his house and does not see his wife. Misfortune. Pushing against the immovable and relying on what wounds you costs you what mattered most.
He comes very slowly, oppressed in a golden carriage. Humiliation, but there is an end. Your wealth or position hampers the help you want to give, and you arrive late. Persist anyway; the connection is finally made.
Nose and feet cut off, oppressed by the man with purple knee bands. Joy comes gently. It furthers one to make offerings. Even those in high position are hemmed in; relief arrives slowly, through sincerity rather than force.
He is oppressed by creeping vines and moves uncertainly, saying that movement brings regret. If he repents of that hesitation and makes a start, good fortune comes. The last restraints are mostly in your own mind.
