Hexagram 51 · The Arousing
震 · Zhèn
The Judgment
Shock brings success. Shock comes, and there is terror; then laughing words follow. The shock terrifies for a hundred miles, yet the sacrificial spoon and chalice are not spilled. A sudden upheaval arrives without warning. The one who has kept his inner life in order is shaken but not shattered, and continues the ritual with steady hands.
The Image
Thunder repeated: the image of Shock. Thus in fear and trembling the superior man sets his life in order and examines himself. He treats the shock as a summons to look honestly at what he has been avoiding.
Interpretation
Something has struck without warning, or is about to. Bad news, a sudden loss, an announcement that rearranges everything. The hexagram does not pretend this is comfortable, but it is emphatic that shock is not disaster. Thunder frightens and then clears the air; afterwards there is laughter. The whole question is whether you can keep hold of yourself while everything shakes. Do not scramble to recover what you have lost in the first moments, because the text promises those things return by themselves after seven days. Do not freeze, and do not act from panic. Instead let the fright do its proper work, which is to wake you up and make you examine your life with unusual honesty. What have you been postponing? What did the shock reveal that you already knew? Handle those things now, while you can see clearly. Composure held through a genuine shock is the beginning of real authority.
Love
An unexpected event or revelation shakes the relationship. React slowly. Do not make permanent decisions in the first shock, and do not chase after what seems lost. Steadiness and honesty over the following weeks matter far more than anything you say today.
Career
Sudden disruption: restructuring, a lost client, an abrupt change of direction. Stay calm and visible, avoid panic decisions, and be the person who keeps working while others scatter. Use the jolt to fix the weaknesses it exposed rather than merely restoring the old arrangement.
Advice
Let the shock wake you rather than sweep you away, and keep your hands steady.
Line by line
Shock comes and there is terror; then laughing words follow. Good fortune. The first fright is severe but it passes quickly, and afterwards you find the situation improved. Fear here is a useful teacher, not a disaster.
Shock comes bringing danger; you lose your treasures and must climb the nine hills. Do not pursue them; after seven days you will get them back. Withdraw to safety and let losses return in their own time.
Shock comes and makes one distraught. If it spurs you to action you remain free of misfortune. You are unsettled and off balance; the remedy is to move, do something useful, rather than remain paralysed.
Shock is mired. Stuck in soft ground between weak influences, you cannot rise to the occasion. Recognise that this is a moment when you are truly unable to act, and avoid struggling in the mud.
Shock goes back and forth, bringing danger, yet nothing at all is lost, though there are things to be done. Repeated upheaval leaves you shaken but intact. Hold to the middle and attend to your duties.
Shock brings ruin and terrified gazing about. Going ahead brings misfortune. If it strikes the neighbour first and not yourself, there is no blame, though your relations will have something to say.
