The Judgment
The Joyous. Success. Perseverance furthers. Two lakes rest side by side, replenishing one another so that neither dries out. Joy that is firm within and gentle outwardly gives strength; joy that is sought merely for pleasure weakens. Shared gladness, honest talk and mutual encouragement carry people through work that solitude could not.
The Image
Lakes resting one on the other: the image of the Joyous. Thus the superior man joins with his friends for discussion and practice. He learns in company, and his gladness is renewed by exchange.
Interpretation
This is a warm, sociable, communicative hexagram. Conversation goes well, cooperation comes easily, and there is genuine pleasure available in the company of others. The counsel is simply to take it, and to take it honestly. Talk to people, share what you know, learn in company rather than alone, and let yourself enjoy the season. The one caution concerns the source of the joy. Firmness inside with softness outside is what makes it healthy; the reverse, softness inside and charm outside, produces flattery, people-pleasing, and the pursuit of distraction. The lines are pointed about this: joy that goes out looking for stimulation brings misfortune, while joy that arises from sincerity and from work well done needs nothing added. So keep your inner standards intact while being open and pleasant. Say true things kindly. Choose the friendships that make you better rather than merely comfortable, and this period will be both happy and productive.

An easy and affectionate time between you. Talk, laugh, and be openly delighted with each other. Sincerity is what keeps this joy real, so avoid flattery and pleasing performances. Shared enjoyment now builds a store of goodwill you can draw on later.
