Hexagram 8 · Holding Together
比 · Bǐ
The Judgment
Holding together brings good fortune. Inquire of the oracle once again whether you possess sublimity, constancy, and perseverance; then there is no blame. Those who are uncertain gradually join. Whoever comes too late meets with misfortune. Water on the earth flows together without effort, and union forms around a centre that deserves it.
The Image
On the earth is water: the image of holding together. Thus the kings of antiquity established the various states and maintained friendly relations with the feudal lords, binding distant people by trust rather than by force.
Interpretation
This is a hexagram about belonging, and about the honesty required to belong well. A group, partnership, or community is forming around a common centre, and joining it will do you good. But first examine yourself and the centre. Do you have the constancy to be a genuine member rather than a convenient one? Is the person or purpose at the middle actually worth gathering around? Union built on sincerity holds under pressure; union built on advantage dissolves the moment advantage shifts. There is also a timing warning here: hesitate too long and the place that was open to you will close. If you feel the pull toward these people or this cause, move now, wholeheartedly and openly, without keeping a private exit strategy. Give your loyalty where you actually mean it, let others come freely rather than pressing them, and the bond that forms will support you for years.
Love
A strong, mutual, well-matched connection, or the chance to commit properly to one. Be sincere and be early. Half-hearted involvement or keeping other options quietly open will cost you something genuinely good. Decide where you belong and then say so plainly, without hedging or waiting to be certain.
Career
Alliances, mergers, teams, and networks favour you now. Choose whom to align with by character, not just opportunity. Join wholeheartedly rather than hedging, and be the trustworthy centre others can organise around if the role is offered. Character rather than convenience should decide whom you tie your name to now.
Advice
Join sincerely and join now, but first make sure the centre is worth your loyalty.
Line by line
Hold to him in truth and loyalty; this is without blame. Truth, like a full earthen bowl, brings good fortune in the end from another source. Simple sincerity at the beginning attracts unexpected friendship later on.
Hold to him inwardly. Perseverance brings good fortune. Let the attachment come from genuine feeling rather than calculation of benefit. Keep your dignity: be sought as an equal, not accepted as a supplicant.
You hold together with the wrong people. You have attached yourself to a circle whose values are not yours. Nothing here is fatal yet, but drifting deeper will cost you. Loosen the tie honestly and early.
Hold to him outwardly also. Perseverance brings good fortune. Show your allegiance openly rather than privately. Public, unhesitating support for a worthy person or cause strengthens both you and them.
Manifestation of holding together. In the hunt the king uses beaters on three sides only and forgoes game that runs off in front. The citizens need no warning. Good fortune. Let people come and go freely.
He finds no head for holding together. Misfortune. You have arrived without commitment or without a centre to gather around, and the union cannot form. Decide what you actually belong to before the chance disappears.
