The imagery
A king sits on a throne carved with bulls' heads, wearing a robe embroidered all over with grapevines and clusters of fruit. In his right hand he holds a sceptre and in his left a golden pentacle rests on his knee, held lightly. Vines grow thickly around and over the throne, and roses and more grapes crowd the foreground, so that the whole seat seems half absorbed into the garden. Behind him rises the wall of a castle he presumably built. His armoured foot rests on something solid. He is entirely at ease, a man surrounded by the results of long, patient work who no longer needs to check whether any of it is still there. Wealth here has become entirely ordinary to the man who made it.
Upright
General
Mastery of the material world, held without anxiety. The King of Pentacles has built something substantial and can now be generous with it: stable, dependable, good with money, and interested in results rather than theory. He asks you to take a long view, manage what you have properly, and use your resources to create security for other people as well as yourself. This card can indicate a mentor, employer or advisor with real experience. It can also be an invitation to step into that role yourself and lead from competence.
Love
Steady, providing, deeply loyal love. This card points to a partner who shows commitment through actions and does not walk away when things get difficult, or to you being that presence for someone else. Comfort and generosity are part of how affection is expressed here. Guard against measuring the relationship in what you provide rather than in how present you are. Sitting down together with nothing to fix is worth more than another improvement to the house.
Career
Leadership, expertise and hard won authority. Business goes well, especially anything long established, tangible or built on a genuine craft. You may be managing people, running a company, or being recognised as the person who reliably delivers. Make decisions with a five year horizon and be generous with opportunities for others. Reputations built this way are extremely durable, and people will remember how you treated them on the way up.
Money
Financial security through good management rather than luck. Investments mature, business income is stable, assets are well looked after. This is a strong card for property, long term planning and any decision that rewards patience and diligence. Take professional advice where it is warranted, keep your records in order, and consider what your money could build for others as well as for you.
Reversed
General
Wealth or control gripped too tightly. Reversed, the King of Pentacles can be materialism that has crowded out everything else, status measured entirely in possessions, or a stubbornness that will not hear a new idea because the old one made money. It can also show poor management, a plan run on assumption rather than attention, or generosity that comes with conditions attached. Widen the definition of success you are working with. Ask what the money is actually for, and let someone competent tell you something you do not want to hear.
Love
Providing instead of connecting. Reversed can describe a partner who is generous with money and unavailable in every other way, or who uses financial power to control decisions. It may also point to your own habit of solving problems for people rather than being close to them. Put the wallet down and stay in the conversation. Presence, patience and honest feeling are the things this card struggles to buy.
Career
Controlling management, resistance to change, or a business drifting because nobody is minding the details. Reversed can also show a leader who values loyalty over competence, or success pursued at real cost to health and relationships. Delegate genuinely, review the fundamentals, and welcome the person who disagrees with you. Stability that cannot adapt is only a slower kind of decline.
Money
Money mismanaged or over relied upon. Reversed can mean risky decisions taken from overconfidence, finances neglected because they have always worked out before, or wealth used as leverage over other people. Go back to the accounts personally, get an independent review, and simplify anything you cannot explain clearly. Security rests on attention, not on the assumption that it will hold.
