The imagery
A horned, bat-winged figure with the legs and claws of a beast crouches on a black half-cube, one hand raised in a mocking blessing, the other holding a lit torch pointed downward. An inverted pentagram sits between the horns. Below, a naked man and woman stand chained by the neck to the cube, small horns growing on their heads, tails ending in flame and grapes. The chains are loose. The loops could be lifted over their heads at any moment, and neither of them is trying. The figures echo the couple from the Lovers, now in darkness with the angel replaced by an idol of their own making. This is the card of bondage that is chosen, of appetite, shame and the comfortable lie, and of how ordinary all of it looks from inside.

General
Something has a hold on you, and part of you is cooperating with it. The Devil describes attachment, compulsion and the arrangements we stay in because leaving feels harder than staying: a habit, a job, a relationship, a story about ourselves. The chains are loose, which is the whole message. Look honestly at what the situation gives you, because it gives you something or you would not be there. Naming it removes most of its power. This card is not a condemnation; it is an invitation to see the mechanism clearly and remember that you are holding one end of it.
Love
Intense attraction that may be more compelling than nourishing. Passion, obsession, jealousy or a dynamic where both people know it is not good and neither leaves. The question is whether the connection expands your life or narrows it. Honest desire is welcome here; the warning is about dependency dressed up as love. Look at what you tolerate and ask why. The answer is usually worth knowing.
Career
A situation that pays well and costs a lot. Golden handcuffs, a difficult culture accepted for the salary, or ambition that has become the only thing you are. This card also warns of contracts with unpleasant terms buried in them. You have more freedom than the situation lets you feel. Start with one small refusal and see what actually happens; it is usually less than you fear.
Money
Debt, dependence or spending driven by something other than need. This card often marks money used to soothe a feeling, or a financial arrangement that quietly controls your choices. Read the terms before you sign anything. Facing the real total is unpleasant for an hour and freeing for a long time afterwards.
Reversed
General
The chain is coming off. Reversed, the Devil is one of the deck's most hopeful positions: a habit examined, a hold weakening, a truth admitted. You may be in the early, awkward part of breaking free, where the old comfort still calls and the new freedom feels unsteady. Keep going, and get support rather than doing it alone. Less happily, this card can also show denial deepening, the point where you decide not to look. Only you know which of the two this is, and you do know. Honesty about the mechanism is where freedom starts.
Love
Recognising a pattern and beginning to step out of it. You may be leaving something that was harmful, or finally naming a dynamic you have been excusing for years. Reversed, this card supports that decision and warns that the pull backward will be strong for a while. Where denial is the theme instead, let someone outside the situation see it clearly with you.
Career
Freedom from a role or arrangement that had become confining. Reversed, this card supports handing in the notice, renegotiating the terms or stepping back from an obsessive relationship with your own ambition. Plan the exit properly rather than storming out. If you are still inside, start building the thing that will eventually let you leave. It begins with one honest evening of planning.
Money
A dependence is being addressed. Debt repayment begins, a spending pattern is confronted, or you refuse an arrangement that never favoured you. Reversed, this card rewards facing the numbers and asking for help where you need it. Progress may be slow at first. Every payment made and every temptation declined loosens the grip a little further.
