Xuanzang Fetches the Scriptures

Neutral

The poem

Robes and cap set right again, the old family style;they call it fruitless, yet the merit is really there.Sweep away the thorns and brambles from the road, and the three of you agree, and are of one mind again.

The story

The monk Xuanzang left home at thirteen and in 629 set out alone for India, crossing deserts and snow passes and reaching it only after four years. He studied at Nalanda, and after seventeen years and fifty thousand miles he returned to Chang'an in 645 carrying six hundred and fifty-seven Buddhist texts.

What it means

The image is setting the robes and cap right again: hard first, easy afterwards. You put your dress in order and restore the old family style, and though it looks like labour without result, the merit is genuinely there; sweep the thorns from the road, and three parties make a new agreement and are of one mind. The key words are reorganise and reunite. You are not being asked to start over somewhere else, but to overhaul what you already have, talk through the old estrangement and clear the obstacles. Once the wills are joined the road is open.

By area of life

Wealth

Gain is good and deals are favourable. Review your holdings, rethink the strategy, and set out again after the overhaul.

Love

To find, deepen or recover a relationship, first remake yourself and then meet the other person with a genuinely new attitude rather than repeating the old approach.

Work

Applications turn on your resolve, and presentation matters. Set your ambitions, rebuild the front, regroup and go again, and business succeeds.

Health

Review the illness thoroughly, investigate what caused it, and treat the whole rather than the part. Make an offering for peace.

Travel

Discuss the venture with the others involved, clear the obstacles together, and the prospect is brilliant. Travellers arrive safely, and joined intentions carry the whole plan.

Advice

You do not need a new venture, just an overhaul of this one and an honest conversation with the people in it.
