The Judgment
Modesty creates success. The superior person carries things through. A mountain stands hidden inside the earth, immense but making no display of itself. What is high lowers itself and what is low is lifted, so the situation balances. This is the one hexagram in which every line is favourable, because modesty spoils nothing.
The Image
Within the earth, a mountain: the image of modesty. Thus the superior person reduces that which is too much and augments that which is too little, weighing things in order to make their distribution equal.
Interpretation
Modesty here is not self-deprecation and certainly not weakness. It is the accurate self-assessment of someone who has real substance and feels no need to advertise it. The mountain inside the earth is still a mountain. In this situation, understating yourself, sharing credit, listening more than you speak, and quietly finishing the work will carry you further than any assertion of status could. People trust the unpretentious, and doors open that would stay shut to someone pushing. Practically, this means levelling things out: give away some of what you have too much of, ask for help where you are short, and correct imbalances in workload, money, or attention that everyone has been politely ignoring.
