The Judgment

Enthusiasm. It furthers one to install helpers and to set armies marching. Thunder bursts out of the earth and everything answers it. When a movement follows the natural inclination of people, it meets no resistance and gathers force by itself. Organise that energy at once, because enthusiasm that is not given a shape disperses quickly.

The Image

Thunder comes resounding out of the earth: the image of enthusiasm. Thus the ancient kings made music in order to honour merit, and offered it with splendour to the Supreme Deity, inviting their ancestors to attend.

Interpretation

Collective energy is available to you. An idea, a project, or a mood has caught on, and people want to move. This is a genuinely powerful moment, and the practical instruction is to organise it immediately: appoint helpers, assign roles, set the direction while the excitement is fresh. Enthusiasm is fuel, not structure, and it evaporates if nothing is built with it. Music, ritual, celebration, and shared symbols matter more than they seem to here, because they are what turn a crowd of individuals into something coherent. Two warnings run through the lines. Do not become intoxicated by the excitement itself, mistaking the feeling of momentum for actual progress, and do not be the person who shows off at the first sign of success. Stay clear-headed inside the enthusiasm, and be willing to stop or change when the mood does. Timing sense is everything in this hexagram.

Love

Excitement, attraction, and a strong shared spark. Enjoy it fully, but let it settle into something with substance before making large promises. Infatuation is real energy; it is not yet evidence of compatibility. Enjoy the momentum and let time show you whether there is substance under the spark.

Career

Launch the initiative now, while people are willing. Delegate early, communicate the vision clearly, and convert the excitement into schedules and ownership. Beware of hype outrunning delivery and of celebrating before anything is finished. Convert the excitement into schedules and clear ownership before the mood moves on.

Advice

Ride the wave of enthusiasm, but organise it into structure before it fades.

Line by line

Line 1

Enthusiasm that expresses itself brings misfortune. Boasting about your connections or your prospects at the outset spends the energy and invites resentment. Say less and let the momentum build unannounced.

Line 2

Firm as a rock. Not a whole day. Perseverance brings good fortune. You see the situation clearly and do not get swept along. Recognising the turning point immediately, before the day is out, is the whole skill.

Line 3

Enthusiasm that looks upward creates remorse. Hesitation brings remorse. Waiting for someone above to hand you excitement leaves you dependent and late. Find your own centre of gravity and act on it.

Line 4

The source of enthusiasm. He achieves great things. Doubt not. You gather friends around you as a hair clasp gathers the hair. You are the genuine centre of this movement; trust it and gather people.

Line 5

Persistently ill, and still does not die. A chronic constraint that never quite becomes fatal. The pressure is uncomfortable but it keeps you alert and alive, which is better than intoxicated collapse.

Line 6

Deluded enthusiasm. But if after completion one changes, there is no blame. You have been carried away and can see it. Waking up and correcting course now cancels the error entirely.
