The Judgment

The Taming Power of the Great. Perseverance furthers. Not eating at home brings good fortune. It furthers one to cross the great water. Heaven is held within the mountain: enormous energy contained, concentrated, and stored rather than spent. Strength that is disciplined this way becomes capable of the largest undertakings.

The Image

Heaven within the mountain: the image of the taming power of the great. Thus the superior person acquaints himself with many sayings of antiquity and many deeds of the past, in order to strengthen his character.

Interpretation

You are holding great power in check, and that restraint is exactly what is making it valuable. This is a period of accumulation: of knowledge, skill, capital, credibility, or sheer readiness. Do not spend it yet. Every day you continue to store rather than discharge, your eventual capacity grows. Study seriously, learn from people who have done this before, and let history and experience shape your character rather than relying on raw talent. The line about not eating at home means going out into public service or a larger arena, and being fed by the world rather than by your own small store; this is a hexagram that eventually wants you engaged, not hidden. So the movement is inward first and then outward: concentrate now, and when the containment finally opens, you will be able to cross the great water. Daily discipline, unglamorous and repeated, is the whole mechanism here.

Love

Hold back a little and let feeling accumulate rather than discharging it immediately. Depth is building. Learn about each other properly. What is restrained now becomes far stronger than what is spent early. Restraint now is not distance; it is the discipline that gives this real weight later.

Career

Study, train, save, and build capability before making your move. Seek mentors and precedents rather than improvising. A larger role is coming, and its size depends on how much you accumulate in this quiet period. The size of the role that follows depends on how much you accumulate in this quiet period.

Advice

Store your strength and study hard; the great crossing comes after the accumulation.

Line by line

Line 1

Danger is at hand. It furthers one to desist. You want to push forward and the way is not clear yet. Stopping when you meet the first genuine obstacle preserves the strength you will need later.

Line 2

The axletree is taken from the wagon. Immobilised on purpose rather than by accident. Remove your own means of rushing ahead, accept the halt calmly, and let the restraint do its work.

Line 3

A good horse that follows others. Awareness of danger, with perseverance, furthers. Practise chariot driving and armed defence daily. It furthers one to have somewhere to go. The way opens; stay skilled.

Line 4

The headboard of a young bull. Great good fortune. Prevent the problem before it develops any force, while the horns are still soft. Early, gentle structure spares everyone a later battle.

Line 5

The tusk of a gelded boar. Good fortune. Neutralise the dangerous energy at its source instead of fighting its expression. Indirect, intelligent handling defeats what direct confrontation could not. Deal with the cause and the symptom disappears.

Line 6

One attains the way of heaven. Success. The containment ends and the accumulated power is released. Everything you stored is now available and the road ahead is completely open. Move now, freely and at full strength.
