井 · Jǐng
The Judgment
The Well. The town may be changed but the well cannot be changed. It neither decreases nor increases; people come and go and draw from the well. If one gets down almost to the water and the rope does not go all the way, or the jug breaks, that is misfortune. What truly nourishes people is permanent; only the means of reaching it must be maintained.
The Image
Water over wood: the image of the Well. Thus the superior man encourages the people at their work and exhorts them to help one another. The community, like the well, exists to be drawn from by all.
Interpretation
The well is the deep, unchanging source that everything else depends on: your fundamental skills, your values, your health, the relationships that actually sustain you. Towns are rebuilt and jobs change, but the well stays where it is. This hexagram asks you to look at the condition of yours. Wells silt up when neglected, and the failures the text describes are all failures of maintenance and follow-through: a rope too short, a jug that breaks just as the water is reached, a good clean well nobody bothers to drink from. So finish things. Repair what has been let slide. Go back to fundamentals, whether that means basic training, an old friendship, an honest look at your finances, or simply sleep. And note the well's other quality: it is public. What you restore here should be available to others too, since a source that only serves you stagnates. Do the unglamorous maintenance now, and everything downstream of it improves.
Love
Return to the basics of caring for each other: time, attention, honesty, physical presence. A relationship dries out through neglect far more often than through conflict. Repair what has quietly been let slide, and the old warmth is still there to be drawn on.
Career
Invest in fundamentals rather than surfaces. Deepen core competence, fix the process everyone works around, and finish the job properly instead of stopping just short. Make your knowledge available to colleagues; a resource that is shared stays fresh and raises your standing.

Clean and deepen your own well, and make sure the rope reaches all the way down.
Line by line
One does not drink the mud of the well, and no animals come to an old well. Neglected long enough, a source becomes useless and is abandoned. Do not let your abilities or relationships silt up through simple inattention.
At the well hole one shoots fishes; the jug is broken and leaks. Talent is being spent on trivialities while the means of using it decays. Stop the small amusements and repair what actually carries the water.
The well is cleaned but no one drinks from it. This is my heart's sorrow, for the water could be drawn. Real ability goes unused because no one has noticed. Make yourself known; the waste is genuinely avoidable.
