Hexagram 49 · Revolution
革 · Gé
The Judgment
Revolution. On your own day you are believed. Supreme success, furthered by perseverance, and regret disappears. Fire in the lake: two elements that cannot coexist, so one must give way. Radical change succeeds only when the time is genuinely ripe, the cause is just, and the people concerned have come to trust the one who leads it.
The Image
Fire in the lake: the image of Revolution. Thus the superior man sets the calendar in order and makes the seasons clear. He replaces confusion with a rhythm everyone can understand.
Interpretation
Something in your life has outlived its usefulness and needs to be replaced rather than repaired. A role, a system, a way of relating, a version of yourself. This hexagram is entirely in favour of that change, with one insistent condition: timing. Revolution attempted too early fails and discredits the cause; the text says trust comes on the appointed day, not before. So test the ground. When the same conclusion has been reached three separate times, and the people affected have started agreeing with you rather than resisting, the moment has arrived. Then act thoroughly. Half a change is worse than none, because it leaves the old structure standing while removing your protection. Be prepared, too, for the depth of transformation this asks: the great man changes like a tiger, the superior man like a panther, and even those who only change their faces are altered. Afterwards, stabilise quickly. New order needs a clear calendar, not further upheaval.
Love
The relationship needs to be remade, not patched. Old patterns have to be named and genuinely abandoned by both of you. Move when you are both ready rather than in a moment of anger, and then commit fully to the new terms you have agreed.
Career
A real change is due: a career shift, a restructure, a way of working that no longer fits. Build support first, act decisively when the moment comes, and then establish clear new procedures quickly so the change settles rather than drifting.
Advice
Make the change completely, but only once the time is genuinely ripe and trust has been earned.
Line by line
Wrapped in the hide of a yellow cow. At the beginning, hold yourself firmly in check. You lack the position and support to change anything yet, so bind your impulses and do nothing that could be called premature.
When your own day comes, you may create revolution. Starting brings good fortune, no blame. Preparation is complete and the moment has arrived. Move now, decisively and openly, rather than waiting for a certainty that will never come.
Starting brings misfortune; perseverance brings danger. When talk of revolution has gone round three times, commit yourself and you will be believed. Neither rush nor stubbornly refuse; act when consensus has genuinely formed.
Regret disappears; people believe him. Changing the form of government brings good fortune. Because your motives are clean and your competence is proved, a fundamental change can now be carried through with real support.
The great man changes like a tiger; even before he consults the oracle he is believed. The transformation is bold, unmistakable and clearly for the good. Its rightness is so evident that no one needs persuading.
The superior man changes like a panther, the petty man merely his face. Starting again brings misfortune; remaining persevering brings good fortune. Consolidate now. Do not demand inner conversion from everyone, and stop revolutionising.
