Hexagram 61 · Inner Truth
孚 · Zhōng Fú
The Judgment
Inner Truth. Pigs and fishes; good fortune. It furthers one to cross the great water; perseverance furthers. Sincerity that reaches even the least receptive creatures is genuine sincerity. Wind moves over the lake and stirs it without touching bottom. When the heart is empty of prejudice, truth passes between people directly and needs no argument.
The Image
Wind over the lake: the image of Inner Truth. Thus the superior man discusses criminal cases in order to delay executions. He looks for the truth of a person, not merely the facts of a charge.
Interpretation
The power in this hexagram is sincerity, and it is described almost as a physical force. Two things resonate when they are genuinely tuned to each other, and the classical image is a crane calling in the shade while its young answers, unseen and unprompted. This is the atmosphere you are in now. What you truly mean will be felt, whether or not you say it well, and what you are pretending will also be felt. So make your inner state the thing you work on. Set aside prejudice and the wish to be right, approach the other person with real openness, and try to understand what they are actually like rather than what your theory says. Difficult undertakings, including the great crossing, succeed at such a time because trust carries you where technique cannot. Be careful only of empty eloquence, the cockcrow that rises to heaven, impressive noise with nothing behind it. Truth here is not performance; it is simply meaning what you say.
Love
A time of unusual emotional resonance. Speak honestly about what you actually feel and listen for what is unsaid. Deep understanding is possible now, even across distance or difference, because both of you are genuinely open rather than defending a position.
Career
Build trust rather than leverage. Be transparent about difficulties, keep your commitments exactly, and take other people's perspectives seriously. Agreements made in this spirit hold. Avoid impressive presentations with nothing behind them; substance is what people are responding to now.
Advice
Mean what you say and stay genuinely open, and the right people will answer.
Line by line
Being prepared brings good fortune. If there are secret designs, it is disquieting. Inner readiness and simple honesty are enough at the start. Any hidden agenda, however small, will unsettle everything that follows.
A crane calls in the shade and its young answers. I have a good goblet and I will share it with you. Sincerity resonates unseen. What you truly are draws its like without any effort at persuasion.
He finds a comrade; now he drums, now he stops, now he sobs, now he sings. Your inner state depends entirely on another person. This is real feeling but it leaves you without any centre of your own.
The moon is nearly full; the team horse goes astray. No blame. Turn away from your equals and companions toward the higher purpose. Losing the pair is necessary here, and no fault attaches to it.
He possesses truth, which links people together. No blame. A sincerity strong enough to hold everyone in place. Because you are entirely reliable, the whole situation coheres around you without force.
Cockcrow penetrating to heaven; perseverance brings misfortune. Words that rise higher than the substance behind them. Impressive noise cannot be sustained, and persisting in it will eventually expose the emptiness.
