Hexagram 62 · Preponderance of the Small
过 · Xiǎo Guò
The Judgment
Preponderance of the Small. Success; perseverance furthers. Small things may be done, great things should not. The flying bird brings the message: it is not well to strive upward, it is well to remain below. Great good fortune. In a time when only minor forces are available, attend to detail, keep your ambitions modest, and stay close to the ground.
The Image
Thunder on the mountain: the image of Preponderance of the Small. Thus in conduct the superior man gives preponderance to reverence, in bereavement to grief, and in expenditure to thrift. He exceeds slightly on the side of care.
Interpretation
This is a season for small things done exceptionally well. Grand plans will not fly now, and the harder you push upward the more clearly you will feel the resistance. Accept that and turn your attention downward, to detail, maintenance, courtesy and thrift. The hexagram even recommends a slight excess in the modest virtues: be a little more respectful than necessary, a little more careful with money, a little more attentive to people's feelings than the occasion strictly requires. That mild overcorrection is exactly right for the conditions. Do not take on the large project, the confrontation, or the dramatic gesture, and be wary of anyone urging you to be bold. Meanwhile the small opportunities in front of you are genuinely worth taking, and diligence now quietly prepares the ground for a bigger season later. The bird that stays low finds its nest; the one that insists on climbing meets the storm.
Love
Attend to small kindnesses rather than big declarations. Remember the details, be a little more considerate than strictly required, and let care show in ordinary moments. This is not the time to force a major decision about the relationship's future.
Career
Focus on execution, accuracy and housekeeping rather than strategy or expansion. Deliver the modest thing flawlessly. Be economical, be scrupulously polite with everyone, and postpone the ambitious proposal until conditions can actually carry it. Small reliability accumulates steadily into real standing.
Advice
Keep your aims small and your care slightly excessive, and stay close to the ground.
Line by line
The bird meets with misfortune through flying. Attempting to rise before you have the strength or standing exposes you fatally. Ambition at the very start of a small season is the clearest way to fail.
She passes her ancestor and meets her ancestress; he does not reach the prince and meets the official. No blame. Aim modestly and go through proper intermediaries; the smaller access is the correct one.
If one is not extremely careful, someone may come up from behind and strike him. Misfortune. In a period when petty forces are strong, ordinary confidence is not enough. Take precautions that feel excessive.
No blame. He meets him without passing by. Going brings danger, so be on guard and do not act. Be constantly persevering. Restrain yourself, remain yielding, and let the moment pass unexploited.
Dense clouds but no rain from our western territory; the prince shoots and hits the one in the cave. Effort brings no release yet. Reach for the capable person in obscurity who can help you.
He passes him by without meeting; the flying bird leaves him. Misfortune, and this means calamity. Going too far and rising too high in a small time brings self-inflicted disaster rather than mere bad luck.
