The imagery
A man tiptoes away from a camp of striped tents, carrying five swords bundled awkwardly against his chest by their blades. He looks back over his shoulder with a small pleased smile, and behind him two swords remain planted upright in the ground. In the distance a group of soldiers stands near the tents, apparently unaware of him. Everything about his posture is quick and improvised: he is holding the swords in the most dangerous way possible, he has taken more than he can carry, and he has left evidence behind. Waite gives us cleverness without wisdom. It is an image of a plan that will probably work today, made by someone who has not thought very hard about the day after that.
Upright
General
Someone is being less than straight, and there is a good chance the cards are pointing at a strategy rather than a crime. The Seven of Swords covers everything from a smart workaround to a genuine deception: keeping a plan quiet, taking the unofficial route, telling a partial truth because the whole one is inconvenient. Ask two questions. Would you be comfortable if this were visible, and can you carry what you are taking? If either answer is no, adjust now. Used well, this card is resourceful and independent. Used badly, it is a short cut that quietly costs your credibility.
Love
Something is being kept back. It might be a small secret, a flirtation not mentioned, or a bigger dishonesty; it might also be your own instinct that the story you are being told has gaps. Do not accuse on a feeling alone, but do ask direct questions and pay attention to how they are answered. If you are the one withholding, consider what the secrecy is protecting and whether it is worth the distance it creates. Trust rebuilds through detail, not declarations.
Career
Work happening off the record: a project pursued quietly, a job hunt kept private, credit taken by someone who did not do the work, or a corner cut in the hope nobody checks. Keep your own records, be careful what you share with whom, and make sure any clever shortcut of yours would survive daylight. If you are planning a move, discretion is sensible right now, but do not let discretion slide into misrepresentation.
Money
Be careful with money you cannot fully see. This card flags loose paperwork, an arrangement that depends on something not being noticed, or someone else being creative with the details. Check accounts and statements, secure passwords and cards, and be sceptical of any deal that requires you not to ask questions. Small unexplained amounts are worth chasing early.
Reversed
General
The truth surfaces. Reversed, the Seven of Swords often means a secret comes out, a confession is made, or someone quietly returns what they took. It can be a great relief, especially if the hiding was your own. Its other face is self deception: the clever story you have been telling yourself about why the shortcut is fine. Bring it into the open with someone you trust and listen to how it sounds out loud. Coming clean early is almost always cheaper than being found out, and it leaves you with your self respect intact.
Love
A concealment is revealed or admitted. Depending on what it was, this is either the start of honest repair or the end of the pretence. Reversed also describes the decision to stop keeping something back yourself. Tell it plainly, without a defensive speech attached, and give the other person room to react. If you are being asked to forgive, take the time you need and watch behaviour rather than promises.
Career
A hidden manoeuvre is exposed, or you decide to bring a private plan into the open before someone else does it for you. This can be entirely positive: announcing a resignation, admitting an error while it is still small, or finally being credited for work that someone else had quietly claimed. Reversed advises straightforwardness now, because the tactical advantage of secrecy has passed and plain honesty is the stronger position in the room.
Money
A financial irregularity is discovered or corrected. It might be a missed charge, an arrangement nobody wrote down properly, or money quietly borrowed that now needs acknowledging out loud. Reversed favours full disclosure, tidying the paperwork and closing whatever loophole you have been relying on. Say the real number to the person who needs to hear it, then agree a repayment plan you can actually keep.
