Original: 阴阳道合总由天 / 女嫁男婚喜偎然 / 但见龙蛇相会合 / 熊罴入梦乐团圆
The story
When Empress Wu took the throne, the Tang prince Li Dan was reduced to a commoner and wandered the countryside, where he met a village woman named Hu Fengjiao. Each was said to carry half of a seal brought from the womb, and the halves matched exactly. Dragon meant the prince and phoenix the woman; the marriage was heaven's arrangement, not theirs.
What it means
The image is yin and yang in accord: harmony and great good fortune. The meeting of the two has its own appointed number, and that they can now be reconciled is anything but accidental. Dragon and serpent point to those years, and to the third and fourth lunar months, and also to two parties of very unequal standing finally fitting together.
