The story
Pei Du lost both parents young and lived on charity in a mountain shrine, and a physiognomist told him he was fated to die violently. He later found a jade belt that a young woman had raised to ransom her imprisoned father, and returned it without taking anything. That hidden merit overturned his fate, and he rose to be one of the great chancellors of the Tang.
What it means
The image is a grove of pines and cypresses. They are not the growth of a single year, and their value comes precisely from the storms that could not break them but only made them denser. Two words matter here: endure and accumulate. The hardship in front of you is not an obstruction, it is the process that produces the grade of timber you will need. At the same time do as Pei Du did and build up quiet good. When merit and capacity are both sufficient, you are suddenly called on, and what you are called on to carry is a roof beam.
