The imagery
In the courtyard of an old stone manor, a child in a heavy red hood bends down to hand a cup filled with white flowers to a smaller child, who reaches up for it with both hands. Five more flower-filled cups stand around them on a low stone plinth and on the ground. The buildings are warm yellow, the sunlight is soft, and in the background a guard walks away up a path, leaving the two children entirely unsupervised and entirely safe. Everything is scaled to comfort: low walls, quiet colours, no horizon to worry about. The gesture at the centre is a gift given without calculation, and the flowers, which are five-petalled and white, suggest sweetness rather than passion. This is memory as a safe interior place, the card of childhood, of old kindnesses, and of people who knew you before you were complicated.
Upright
General
The past comes back kindly. The Six of Cups brings nostalgia, reunions, and simple pleasures that ask nothing of you: an old friend gets in touch, a place from childhood matters again, or you find yourself remembering who you were before you got so careful. Let it be nourishing. This card also calls for generosity of the uncomplicated kind, the small gift, the favour without a ledger, the kindness offered because it was in your hands. Something from earlier in your life may return in a useful form now. Take the sweetness, and try not to move into it permanently.
Love
Tenderness, sentiment, and sometimes the reappearance of someone from your past. An old flame may resurface, or a current relationship may soften into something easier and more affectionate. The mood is gentle rather than passionate. Do small kind things without expecting a return. If someone returns from your history, judge them on who they are now rather than on the memory you have been keeping warm.
Career
A former colleague, employer, or line of work may reappear, often to your advantage. Old contacts are worth reaching out to. This card also favours work involving children, teaching, heritage, or anything that draws on your earliest interests. If you have drifted far from what you originally loved doing, ask whether some part of it could be brought back into your working life.
Money
Money may come from something in the past: a refund, an old debt repaid, family, or an item you had forgotten you owned. Generosity is favoured, particularly toward family and children. Avoid sentimental spending on things that only recreate a feeling, since nostalgia is an expensive purchasing strategy. Give what you can genuinely spare, and enjoy the giving of it.
Reversed
General
The past has become a place you live rather than a place you visit. Reversed, this card describes an idealised memory that makes the present look thin by comparison, or an old attachment that keeps you from building anything new. It can also describe the healthier opposite: finally leaving the past behind, growing up in some specific way, and stopping the story you have told about your childhood for years. Look at what the memory is doing for you. If it is comfort, keep it. If it is a hiding place, the way out is one ordinary commitment in the present.
Love
Someone or something from the past holds too much space. You may be comparing a current partner with an old one, waiting for an ex who is not coming back, or repeating a pattern that began long before this relationship. Alternatively, you are ready to let an old attachment go, and this card supports it. Meet the person actually in front of you rather than the version you remember.
Career
Clinging to how things used to be, at an old employer or in an outdated way of working. The nostalgia is understandable, and it is also holding you still. Update your skills and your expectations. Alternatively, this reversal can mark a clean break from a professional past you had outgrown, which usually feels unsettling for a month and correct for years.
Money
Family money, old debts, or financial habits learned in childhood are causing friction. Look at the beliefs about money you absorbed early and check whether they still fit your life. Avoid lending out of guilt or sentiment, and settle any long-running informal debts so they stop shaping the relationship. Old arrangements are easier to change than they feel from inside.
Advice
Accept the kindness that comes from your past, and give one freely without keeping score.
Affirmation
I carry the sweetness of where I came from without needing to live there.
